My team and I (Tyronne McGrath of Steel Creations and Michelle Stevens of The Refill Shoppe) were the recipients of the 2015 P.L.A.C.E. (Public and Local Artists Create Environments) artist grant given by the City of Ventura. With the grant we built a damn-near life sized whale's tail out of rebar and recycled plastic bottles. The sculpture stands 9 feet high and is 12 feet wide. We sourced the bottles from the community and had local school and art programs paint and put messages in some of the bottles. We then hosted an event during the 2015 Ventura Art-Walk where we let the community help us finish the sculpture. The inside is lit with LED light strips and has a small sound system which plays music. The piece is meant to spread awareness of plastics pollution in our oceans and help bring to light how detrimental single-use plastic is to our environment..
